Engagement scholars gather to share ideas on societal impact

A group from Outreach and International Affairs and about 10 other Virginia Tech faculty members and graduate students traveled to Portland, Oregon, last week for the 24th annual Engagement Scholarship Consortium International Conference.

Among the attendees were Susan E. Short, associate vice president for engagement; Scott Weimer, executive director of Roanoke Regional Initiatives; Shelly Jobst, director of CPE; Susan Johnstad, director of the Richmond and Newport News centers; and Diane Deffenbaugh, assistant director of communications for engagement.

The conference promotes engaged scholarship and mutually beneficial university-community partnerships with the goal of having societal impact and improving lives. Over four days, university engagement scholars from around the world connected and were inspired by seminars, panel discussions, workshops, and presentations highlighting incredible university-community partnerships.

Virginia Tech and the ESC East Region will host next year’s conference at The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center.
